...in Hessenford, but there is a stunning little local band called Wurlitza based in St.Germans. Went to the Rod'n'Line to see them on Saturday and was bowled over. A wonderful combination of originals and an eclectic selection of covers performed with confidence and verve.

Lil has a fantastic jazzy voice, Lizy contributes some mind bending poetic-narratives-to-music, Claire and Kath are also strong vocalists and  Dave rarely speaks ("the time is drawing near") but underpins everything.I was told that sometimes previously they had come across as a little nervous, but there was no evidence of that on show here. Confident and enjoying themselves the drew us in to their musical world and welcomed us openly.

Saturday was landlord Mike's birthday and although the R'n'L only provides a view of the playing area to a small section of the crowd the music reached out to fill the space. Difficult to pick a highlight - was it Lizzy's strange story of two kids on a train, was it Lil's wonderful voice, was it Kaths powerful composition "Perpetual State of Fear" which segued naturally into Psycho Killer. Mustn't forget the wonderfully suggestive (or even debauched) 'There's No Bill Bailey in Hessenford' (is he listening out there?). Lets pick on Kath's new song 'Transition' which is possibly the best song about Peak Oil and hits all the buttons for the Transition movement. This should be an anthem for summer 2008.

Wonderful also to find so many local references naturally within the songs - this is a strongly rooted group who have blended a unique sound for our times.

May they go from strength to strength - "Transition" for the first single, possibly backed with "Perpetual State of Fear" - number one in my chart for sure. Thanks for an excellent evening.
